Acute and general medicine expert witnesses for claims about hospital care.

Our acute and general medicine physicians provide expert evidence on the hospital care of adults: sepsis, blood clots, deterioration, delayed diagnosis on admission, and unsafe discharge. Send the allegations and your deadline. The search is free, and you can compare physicians before anything is agreed.

I need for case.

What an acute physician can comment on.

An acute physician comments on the care of adults admitted as medical emergencies, from assessment on the acute medical unit (AMU) to the general medical wards.

If the criticism is of care in the emergency department, in theatre or in intensive care, tell us in the enquiry and we will suggest the specialty that fits.

For a stroke or a neurological deterioration, see neurological evidence.

What we need.

Start with the allegations, the dates of the admission and your deadline, and put any limitation date in the enquiry. You get the CVs, fees and availability of physicians who can take the case.

Once you instruct, a named case manager manages the instruction through to delivery of the report. Reports usually take 1 to 2 weeks, or 2 to 3 days when urgent. Timescales are estimates and depend on expert availability, the appointment and receipt of the relevant records.

Common allegations.

The expert assesses the care against the guidance in force when it was given.

AllegationWhat the expert looks atGuidance (England)
Sepsis missed or treated lateRecognition, escalation and the timing of treatmentNICE NG253 (over 16s, from 19 November 2025), which replaced NG51
Blood clots after admissionWhether the risk of venous thromboembolism was assessed and reducedNICE NG89
A deteriorating patientThe observation charts, and whether deterioration was escalatedNEWS2 (Royal College of Physicians, 2017); Martha’s Rule, phased in from May 2024, so check when the hospital adopted it

NICE guidance applies in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements, so tell us where the care was given. The physician gives an opinion on breach of duty and consent under the Bolam and Montgomery tests (Hunter v Hanley in Scotland), set out on our page on medical negligence expert witnesses. Some cases need a second specialty on causation; tell us the outcome, and we will suggest which.

Who handles a hospital claim.

Tell us which hospital, and when. That decides who handles the claim and which guidance the expert applies.

Do I need a consultant physician?

Usually, yes. Solicitors generally instruct a consultant in acute or general internal medicine for court work, and each CV gives the expert’s post.

What does an acute medicine report cost?

Each fee is quoted for your case and comes with the CV. The volume of hospital records drives the fee, so tell us roughly how much there is.

Which sepsis guideline applies to my case?

The one in force when the care was given. In England, NICE replaced NG51 with NG253 for people aged 16 or over, NG254 for under 16s and NG255 for pregnant or recently pregnant people.

Can the expert comment on causation as well?

Often, yes. Where the outcome turns on another specialty, such as neurology after a stroke, the case may need a second expert. Put every question in the enquiry.

Send the case. We find the experts.
