Specialties

Start from the question.

Questions solicitors often bring us, and the specialty that usually answers them. If yours is not here, put it in the enquiry and we will match it.

Which specialty suits your case?

The specialties usually instructed in each type of case. Many cases need more than one expert, so tell us all the medical issues.

Registration and insurance.

We check experts for registration and insurance before the CVs reach you.

Registration. Hospital specialists are usually consultants on the GMC’s Specialist Register, GP experts are on the GMC’s GP Register, and psychologists are registered with the HCPC.

Children proceedings. In England and Wales, in cases issued on or after 20 July 2026, the expert must be a regulated expert unless an exception applies (FPR 25.5A), and a doctor or psychologist regulated by a UK statutory body is one. More on family and care proceedings.

The points to check before you name an expert, from the Civil Justice Council’s guidance, are on our page on how to find an expert witness. Tell us the questions in the enquiry, and we find experts whose expertise fits them.

The expert’s duty is to the court.

Whoever instructs and pays them, the expert must be independent.

England and Wales

  • Civil and family cases: the duty to help the court overrides any obligation to the person who instructs or pays the expert (CPR 35.3; FPR 25.3)
  • Criminal cases: the same duty, with an opinion that is objective and unbiased (CrimPR 19.2)

Scotland

  • The expert gives evidence as a skilled witness
  • Four considerations govern admissibility: whether the evidence will assist the court, knowledge and experience, impartiality, and a reliable body of knowledge (Kennedy v Cordia [2016] UKSC 6, para 44)

Every doctor in the UK

  • The GMC’s guidance sets a duty to the court to act independently and to be objective and impartial
  • That duty overrides any obligation to the person instructing or paying the doctor (para 22)

What if my case needs a specialty not on this page?

Tell us the medical issues in the enquiry, and we will find an expert in that specialty, such as obstetrics, radiology, haematology or nursing care.

What is a medico-legal expert?

A suitably qualified healthcare professional or specialist who gives an independent opinion, within their expertise, for a court or tribunal. A treating doctor who gives evidence of what they saw is a professional witness. An expert gives an opinion on what the facts show.

Is every expert a consultant?

No. Hospital specialists usually are, but GP experts are general practitioners, and psychologists are not medically qualified. Each CV gives the expert’s post, and we check experts for registration and insurance.

Can one expert cover all the issues?

Sometimes. A psychiatrist can usually deal with diagnosis, causation and prognosis together. A physical injury and its psychological effects usually need two experts. Tell us all the issues and we will suggest which experts the case needs.

What is a regulated expert?

An expert regulated by a UK statutory body, on a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, or regulated under the Legal Services Act 2007 (FPR 25.2(1)). It matters in children proceedings issued on or after 20 July 2026.
