Psychologists for injury, family, criminal and parole cases.
Psychological injury, cognitive and neuropsychological testing, risk assessments for parole and assessments of parents in family cases. Send the question and your deadline. The search is free, and we take legally aided cases, including parole, family and criminal work.
Psychological evidence by type of case.
For a sentencing report, send the charge and the sentencing date: under the Sentencing Council’s guidelines, culpability is only reduced where there is sufficient connection between the disorder and the offending, so the report deals with that connection.
Psychological assessment in family proceedings.
In children proceedings in England and Wales, the court’s permission comes before a psychologist assesses a child for a report (Children and Families Act 2014, s13(3)). In cases issued from 20 July 2026 the expert must also be a regulated expert unless an exception applies (FPR 25.5A), and a practitioner psychologist on the HCPC register is one. The full rules are on our family and care proceedings page.
Preliminary enquiries need no permission (PD 25C para 3.4), so send us the case now, leaving out the family’s names. The application must give the expert’s CV, availability and likely cost (para 3.10(a), (b) and (g)), and you get all three with each quote.
A psychologist’s assessment of a parent looks at psychological functioning and cognitive ability. It differs from the social work parenting assessment a local authority carries out.
Cognitive and neuropsychological assessment.
Testing shows how a brain injury, an intellectual disability or a neurological condition affects memory, attention, reasoning and behaviour.
- After a brain injuryA neuropsychological assessment measures the cognitive effects, often alongside a neurologist’s report on the injury itself.
- Capacity to make a decisionCognitive testing can inform whether your client can make the particular decision. See mental capacity.
- Taking part in proceedingsCognitive evidence helps the court decide whether your client lacks capacity to conduct the proceedings and needs a litigation friend.
- Intellectual disabilityAn assessment of intellectual functioning, relevant in family, criminal and capacity cases.
Registration and protected titles.
Nine psychologist titles are protected by law, and only people on the HCPC register may use them. We check experts for registration and insurance before we send the CV.
The Health and Care Professions Council regulates practitioner psychologists under the Health Professions Order 2001. Its register shows each psychologist’s protected title. The word “psychologist” on its own is not protected.
“Chartered Psychologist” is a title of the British Psychological Society, not of the HCPC. For neuropsychology, the Society keeps a Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists; entry requires HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist and a qualification in clinical neuropsychology.
You can also confirm the protected title on the HCPC register yourself.
Across the UK.
We find psychologists for cases in Scotland and Northern Ireland too. Tell us the court.
England and Wales
- The duty to the court overrides any obligation to whoever instructs or pays (CPR 35.3(2); FPR 25.3(2); CrimPR 19.2(2))
- Children proceedings: permission to assess a child, and the regulated expert rule from 20 July 2026
- Legal aid: most expert rates are prescribed, and only prior authority secures an hourly rate before assessment
Scotland
- The psychologist gives evidence as a skilled witness
- The evidence must be necessary for the proper resolution of the matter at issue
- Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 for adults’ capacity; SLAB’s prior approval to employ any expert witness, in civil, criminal and children’s legal aid
Northern Ireland
- Its own courts and rules of court apply
- The Legal Services Agency’s prior authority guidance applies to requests from 6 July 2026
- The psychologist reports to the rules of the court hearing the case
Questions about psychological evidence.
For anything else about your case, call us.
Call 0121 752 6061What will the psychologist need from us?
Once you have chosen: the letter of instruction, the relevant records and the key documents. Please do not send records before then. For the enquiry itself, the five details listed with the form below are enough.
Do I need permission before a psychologist assesses a child?
In children proceedings in England and Wales, yes (Children and Families Act 2014, s13(3)). Preliminary enquiries of experts need no permission, so you can send us the case first and use the CVs and fees in the application.
What is a neuropsychological assessment?
Testing of memory, attention, language, reasoning and other cognitive functions, to show how a brain injury or condition affects your client’s thinking, behaviour and emotions. It is often used after a brain injury, alongside a neurologist’s report.
Do I need a psychologist or a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can comment on medication and medical treatment; a psychologist is not medically qualified and carries out psychological and cognitive testing. One expert is often enough: tell us the question, and we will suggest which fits. More on psychiatric expert evidence.
How long does the report take?
Reports usually take 1 to 2 weeks, or 2 to 3 days when urgent. Timescales are estimates and depend on expert availability, the appointment and receipt of the relevant records.
Do you take legally aided cases?
Yes: the quotes come within the legal aid rates, and where the case justifies a higher rate the quote sets out why, ready for prior authority (in Scotland, prior approval). See fees and legal aid.
